Abbondio, Abundance

Abbondio The name derives from the Latin abundus (= abundant, full) and took in the Christian meaning of abundant [in gifts of the Spirit] rich [justice] .
In the past it was reasonably common, especially in Lombardy and in particular in the Como area, since Sant'Abbondio bishop (fifth century, celebrated on August 31) is the beloved patron of Como. Perhaps precisely because of the strong link with the name of this territory, where the Manzoni had set his novel, he chose to baptize Don Abbondio its fearful care, certainly one of the most memorable characters from The Betrothed .
Less common but with the same derivation, the names are Italian nell'onomastica Abundance Abbondanzi and the latter has the same meaning of abundance and celebrating their name day on September 16 in memory of martyr sant'Abbondanzio Lazio in sec. III-IV. The name Abundance
instead takes the name of the goddess Abundantia (= Wealth ), who became a Roman deity in the Middle Ages a kind of fairy bearer of success, traditionally depicted with a cornucopia, the horn of the goat Amalthea who had nursed Jupiter as a child. Abundance can also be considered as a devotional, derived from the cult of Our Lady of Abundance , venerated in the sanctuary in Leccese: is celebrated on the second Sunday of July.
